A UK based VAT information
If you store goods in the UK and sell them in the UK, and you are a UK registered business, your duty free threshold is no more than £85,000 per annum.
If you are British and want to ship to other European countries/regions, you need to check the VAT threshold of each country/region. If you store goods in that country/region, the system will automatically register the VAT for you from day 1. Please see our other countries/territories page for more information on the registration requirements for each European country/region.
Companies based in the European Union sell to Britain
If your company is located in any eu country/region, but you store your goods in the UK through amazon FBA or other third-party warehouses, you must register for VAT immediately on the first day of trading.
If you store in your home country and ship within the UK, the turnover limit is £70,000 per year until you have to actually register VAT in the UK.
Outside the European Union
If you are outside the eu and sell goods directly to the UK from your own warehouse outside the eu, you do not need to register for VAT, but your customer may have to pay VAT and duty at customs. This means you don't have to register for UK VAT.
Type of VAT in the UK
When we talk about VAT in the UK, we immediately assume that 20% is the applicable rate, which may surprise most people, but it's not true. You can apply for different types of VAT.
Standard vp-20% is the standard UK VAT rate for all purchases and sales, which means you must pay 20% of all our sales to HMRC if applicable, but under this scheme you can deduct the purchase amount from the sale to arrive at the final VAT figure you will pay each quarter.
Special VAT - the VAT rate for certain products in certain categories is 0% or even 5%, and you need to check the product code for each product type to make sure you are charging the correct VAT rate for the goods.
Flat rate - you can apply for a flat rate scheme, which is a fixed percentage of VAT depending on your business unit. For online sellers, the flat rate is 7.5%, but you will get a 1% discount for the first year of VAT registration in the UK. This means you only have to pay 6.5% VAT for the goods you sell in the first year.
